Morning Excercise Program
March 11, 2009
Small School, Big Challenge!!!
As one of SCISA’s Wellness Schools ARA has the opportunity to
compete in their Spring 2009 Wellness Challenges. The challenge that I
would like to take on is the “Most Innovative Programs” Challenge. Our
school is to come up with a program that supports this drive toward a
healthier, happier population through good nutrition and exercise. This
topic is becoming increasingly important as the technological advances of
our time are making our children and adults less active in their everyday
lives.
I strongly believe that starting the day off with some type of
exercise is the best way to motivate a person to have a productive day
whether that means being more engaged in your first period class,
accomplishing more at the office, or getting the housework done. There is a
growing number of educators and researchers that believe one of the many
benefits of exercise is that it primes the brain for learning. These ideas
are the basis for the program I would like to put into action. This program
is about jumpstarting your day, eating a healthy breakfast, and spending
more after school time outside being active.
We would start off the day here at ARA with a 15 minute morning
exercise class in the gym. This will sometimes entail older students
leading the younger students through the workout and other times we will
have two separate workouts going on for upper and lower school. Each time a
student attends the morning workout they receive a ticket and five tickets
can be redeemed for a uniform free day, fifteen tickets is worth a free
lunch on Friday, and twenty five tickets is good for an hour of fun at the
barn with the horses. Following the workouts students will be given a cool
down time before class begins. During this time there will be a simple,
light, nutritious breakfast set up for everyone. In addition to the morning
exercise we want to promote after school time being spent outside, away from
the television, video games, computer etc. To encourage this we will send
home a form where students can record each day any after school activities
that they engage in. Some examples include a bike ride, nature walk,
jumping on trampoline, riding a horse, canoeing, or climbing a tree.
We will be starting on Monday, March 9th. If you want your child to
participate please have them here and in the gym by 8:00. This will be a
light workout and age appropriate. School uniforms will be fine, tennis
shoes please! This will be a great way to wake them up before standardized
testing. We will have food and drink. If any parents would like to help
with breakfast stuff let me know.
Thanks, Abby
